Free-to-Total PSA Ratio

Meaning

The Free-to-Total PSA Ratio is a clinical laboratory measure that compares the concentration of unbound, or “free,” Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) protein to the concentration of the total PSA protein in a patient’s serum. This ratio is used as a diagnostic tool, primarily to help differentiate between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate malignancy in men with elevated total PSA levels. A lower ratio suggests a higher probability of prostate cancer, while a higher ratio is more commonly associated with benign enlargement. It provides a crucial refinement to the initial total PSA screening result.
