Free Thyroxine (t4)

Meaning

Free Thyroxine (fT4) is the minute fraction of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) that circulates in the bloodstream in an unbound, biologically active state. Unlike the majority of T4, which is reversibly sequestered by carrier proteins, fT4 is available to diffuse into peripheral tissues to be converted into the more potent T3 or to directly influence cellular function. Measurement of fT4 provides the most accurate clinical index of the body’s functional thyroid hormone status.
