Free Thyroxine (ft4)

Meaning

Free Thyroxine, or fT4, represents the fraction of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) that is unbound to carrier proteins in the bloodstream and is therefore biologically active. Since only the free fraction can enter target cells to exert its physiological effects, measuring fT4 provides a more accurate assessment of the body’s functional thyroid status than measuring total T4. This metric is a cornerstone in the clinical diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid dysfunction, including hypo- and hyperthyroidism.
