Free T3

Meaning

Free T3, or free triiodothyronine, is the biologically active fraction of the thyroid hormone T3 that is not bound to carrier proteins in the bloodstream, such as thyroxine-binding globulin. This unbound hormone is the form that is able to readily enter target cells and interact with nuclear receptors to exert its profound effects on cellular metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate. Measuring this specific fraction provides the most accurate clinical assessment of a patient’s true thyroid functional status.
