Free T3 Utilization

Meaning

Free T3 Utilization refers to the efficiency and effectiveness with which the unbound, biologically active form of the thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3), is successfully transported into target cells and successfully exerts its profound metabolic and genomic effects. This crucial process encompasses not only the circulating serum concentration but also membrane transport, intracellular conversion of T4 to T3 by deiodinases, and the binding affinity to the nuclear receptor. Suboptimal utilization can result in classic hypothyroid symptoms even when standard circulating T3 levels appear numerically adequate within the conventional reference range.
