Free T3/Reverse T3 Ratio

Meaning

The Free T3/Reverse T3 Ratio is a diagnostic metric calculated by dividing the measured serum concentration of biologically active Free Triiodothyronine by the concentration of its metabolically inactive isomer, Reverse Triiodothyronine. This ratio provides valuable clinical insight into the peripheral conversion efficiency of the primary thyroid hormone, Thyroxine. It serves as an indicator of potential tissue-level thyroid resistance or the presence of a non-thyroidal illness syndrome, often termed euthyroid sick syndrome. A diminished ratio suggests an increased, potentially pathological, shift toward the production of the metabolically inert rT3.
