Free T3 Conversion Rate

Meaning

The Free T3 Conversion Rate is a clinical metric that quantifies the efficiency of the peripheral enzymatic process where the prohormone thyroxine (T4) is deiodinated to form the biologically active hormone triiodothyronine (T3). Specifically, it measures the generation of the unbound, or “free,” T3 fraction, which is the form capable of entering target cells and binding to nuclear receptors to modulate metabolism. This rate is a critical indicator of thyroid health beyond TSH levels, reflecting the body’s ability to activate the circulating thyroid reserve into its functional form. Impairment in this conversion can lead to symptoms of hypothyroidism despite normal T4 levels.
