Free Hormone Bio-Availability

Meaning

Free Hormone Bio-Availability is the critical endocrinological measure of the fraction of a hormone, such as testosterone or estrogen, that is unbound to carrier proteins like Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) or albumin, and is therefore biologically active and capable of binding to its cognate receptors in target tissues. This metric, rather than total hormone concentration, accurately reflects the hormone’s true physiological effect and is essential for clinical assessment of hormonal function. Low bio-availability can lead to symptomatic deficiency despite normal total levels.
