Fragility Fractures

Meaning

Fragility Fractures are defined clinically as bone fractures that occur spontaneously or as a result of trauma equivalent to a fall from a standing height or less, indicating a profound underlying structural weakness of the bone. These fractures are the hallmark of osteoporosis and represent a significant clinical endpoint in age-related bone health decline. The most common sites include the hip, spine, and wrist. Their occurrence signals a severe reduction in bone mineral density and compromised bone microarchitecture, necessitating immediate and long-term therapeutic intervention.
