Fractional Anisotropy

Meaning

Fractional Anisotropy (FA) quantifies the degree to which water diffusion within biological tissues is directionally restricted. This dimensionless scalar value, derived from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), ranges from zero, indicating isotropic diffusion, to one, representing highly constrained, anisotropic diffusion along a specific axis. It assesses the structural organization and integrity of microstructures like white matter tracts.
