Fractional Anisotropy

Meaning

Fractional Anisotropy, or FA, is a quantitative scalar value derived from Diffusion Tensor Imaging that measures the degree of directional coherence in water diffusion within a brain voxel. This metric reflects the structural organization and integrity of white matter tracts, providing a sensitive marker for microstructural damage. FA values range from zero, indicating isotropic or unrestricted diffusion, to one, representing completely anisotropic or highly directional diffusion.
