Forced Desynchrony

Meaning

Forced desynchrony describes a physiological state where an individual’s internal circadian clock, the endogenous rhythm governing biological processes, becomes misaligned with external environmental cues or imposed social schedules. This misalignment represents a persistent disruption of the body’s natural 24-hour cycle, impacting various physiological systems and functions. It is distinct from natural variations in chronotype, representing an imposed lack of synchronicity.
