Follicular Quiescence

Meaning

Follicular Quiescence describes the critical state of temporary or prolonged inactivity observed in the hair follicle stem cell niche, where the stem cells are maintained in a dormant, non-proliferative condition. This resting phase is an essential regulatory period in the hair cycle, preceding the onset of the active growth phase, known as anagen. The precise control of this quiescent state is vital for ensuring the proper timing and length of the hair cycle. Disruption to this intricate balance can lead to pathological hair growth patterns or various forms of alopecia.
