Follicular Hyperkeratinization

Meaning

Follicular hyperkeratinization is a dermatological process characterized by the excessive production and accumulation of keratinocytes, or dead skin cells, within the hair follicle opening. This cellular buildup creates a dense plug, preventing the normal shedding of keratin and sebum, often leading to the formation of comedones, or blocked pores. This condition is frequently implicated in the pathogenesis of acne and other skin textural irregularities, particularly those influenced by hormonal fluctuations. The integrity of skin health and appearance is directly compromised by this cellular dysfunction, often necessitating targeted topical or systemic therapy.
