Follicular Depletion

Meaning

Follicular Depletion is the irreversible, progressive reduction in the total number of primordial and growing ovarian follicles, leading ultimately to the cessation of reproductive function and the onset of menopause. This biological process represents the finite nature of the ovarian reserve, which is a key determinant of a woman’s reproductive lifespan and endocrine health trajectory. The rate of depletion is genetically predetermined but can be accelerated by environmental factors, medical treatments, or certain autoimmune conditions. Clinically, the remaining ovarian reserve is often assessed by measuring serum Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels.
