Follicular Arrest

Meaning

Follicular arrest is a specific pathological state in the female reproductive cycle characterized by the failure of ovarian follicles to progress successfully beyond a certain, critical stage of development, which effectively prevents the selection of a dominant follicle and subsequent ovulation. This particular condition is a recognized hallmark feature of several complex endocrine disorders, most notably Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and represents a significant, common cause of anovulation and female infertility. The underlying physiological issue is a fundamental disruption in the delicate, precise balance of gonadotropins, specifically the ratio between luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which is absolutely essential for proper follicular maturation and release.
