Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Meaning

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a histopathological finding in the kidney characterized by scarring (sclerosis) that affects only a portion (segmental) of the filtering capillary tuft within some (focal) but not all of the glomeruli. This pathology is a leading cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults, a clinical condition marked by severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, and edema. FSGS is not a single disease but rather a pattern of injury with various underlying causes, including genetic, viral, and hemodynamic factors.
