Flutamide

Meaning

Flutamide is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen medication used clinically to effectively block the systemic effects of androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by acting as a competitive inhibitor at the intracellular androgen receptor level. This pharmaceutical agent is primarily utilized in the management of androgen-sensitive conditions like prostate cancer, but it also finds important application in treating hormonal conditions in women characterized by pathological androgen excess, such as severe hirsutism and symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It works by preventing the native androgens from binding to and activating their target receptors in peripheral tissues. Careful, regular monitoring of liver function is essential during treatment due to its metabolic profile.
