Fluid Accumulation

Meaning

Fluid accumulation refers to the abnormal and excessive collection of extracellular fluid within interstitial tissues or serous body cavities, exceeding the physiological capacity for its reabsorption and drainage. This condition, often termed edema when visible, indicates a disturbance in the delicate balance of fluid dynamics regulated by hydrostatic and oncotic pressures across capillary membranes, or by lymphatic system function.
