Flow-Mediated Dilation

Meaning

Flow-Mediated Dilation, or FMD, represents the endothelium-dependent widening of an artery in response to increased blood flow. This physiological response serves as a direct indicator of endothelial function, which is the health and responsiveness of the inner lining of blood vessels. It reflects the capacity of the vascular endothelium to release vasodilatory substances, promoting optimal blood vessel diameter.
