Flow-Mediated Dilation

Meaning

A non-invasive clinical measure of endothelial function, representing the ability of an artery to widen (dilate) in response to an increase in blood flow. It is a critical indicator of vascular health, as impaired dilation is an early sign of endothelial dysfunction, a precursor to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Assessing FMD provides a functional snapshot of the vascular system’s health.
