Flaxseed Lignans

Meaning

Flaxseed lignans are a class of plant compounds, specifically phytoestrogens, predominantly found in flaxseed as secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). Upon consumption, gut microbiota metabolize SDG into enterodiol and enterolactone, known as mammalian lignans. These active metabolites possess structural similarities to endogenous estrogens, allowing them to interact with estrogen receptors and exhibit both weak estrogenic and anti-estrogenic properties within the human body.
