FKBP51

Meaning

FKBP51, or FK506-binding protein 51, is an intracellular protein and a co-chaperone for the Heat Shock Protein 90 (Hsp90) complex, functioning as a critical negative regulator of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). In the context of hormonal health, this protein is a key component of the negative feedback loop of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, directly influencing an individual’s sensitivity to cortisol and their capacity to cope with stress. Genetic polymorphisms in the gene encoding FKBP51 are strongly associated with altered stress response and mood disorders.
