Finite Element Analysis

Meaning

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a sophisticated computational method used in engineering and biomechanics to predict how a physical body or structure reacts to external forces, heat, or other physical effects. This technique discretizes a complex structure, such as bone, cartilage, or soft tissue, into a finite number of smaller, simpler elements, allowing the behavior of the whole system to be modeled and analyzed mathematically. In a clinical context, FEA is applied to accurately assess bone strength, predict patient-specific fracture risk, and optimize the design and placement of orthopedic implants.
