Fibrous Cap

Meaning

The Fibrous Cap is the stabilizing layer composed primarily of extracellular matrix proteins, notably collagen, that overlies an established atherosclerotic plaque within an arterial wall. Its structural integrity is paramount to cardiovascular stability, preventing catastrophic plaque rupture. A robust cap signifies a more stable, less clinically emergent lesion. We monitor factors that degrade this crucial matrix.
