Fibroblast Senescence

Meaning

Fibroblast senescence describes a state where fibroblasts, the primary cells of connective tissue, undergo an irreversible arrest of cell division while remaining metabolically active. These non-proliferative cells exhibit distinct morphological and functional changes, including resistance to programmed cell death and the acquisition of a senescence-associated secretory phenotype, which significantly alters their surrounding tissue environment.
