Fibroblast Senescence

Fibroblast Senescence is the biological state where fibroblasts, the primary cells responsible for synthesizing collagen and the extracellular matrix in connective tissues, enter a state of irreversible growth arrest while remaining metabolically active. These senescent cells cease dividing but secrete a complex mixture of pro-inflammatory molecules, known as the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP). In the context of hormonal health and beauty, this phenomenon is a key driver of skin aging, as the compromised fibroblasts lead to reduced collagen production, tissue stiffness, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Hormonal changes, particularly the decline in estrogen and testosterone, can accelerate fibroblast senescence, contributing directly to the loss of skin elasticity and wound healing capacity.
