FHA

Meaning

Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (FHA) refers to the absence of menstrual periods, not due to anatomical abnormalities or other medical conditions, but primarily from a reversible suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. This physiological state represents an adaptive response to perceived energy deficits, commonly arising from factors such as inadequate caloric intake, excessive physical activity, or significant psychological stress.
