FFAR2

Meaning

FFAR2, or Free Fatty Acid Receptor 2, is a G protein-coupled receptor primarily activated by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are metabolites produced by the gut microbiota through the fermentation of dietary fiber. This receptor is expressed on various cell types, including enteroendocrine cells, immune cells, and adipocytes. FFAR2 plays a significant role in mediating the systemic effects of the gut microbiome on host physiology, particularly in regulating energy metabolism, appetite, and inflammatory responses. Its function links dietary fiber intake and microbial health directly to endocrine signaling.
