Fetal Development

Meaning

Fetal development is the clinical and biological term encompassing the entire complex process of growth and differentiation that occurs from the ninth week of gestation until birth. This period follows the embryonic stage and is characterized by the rapid maturation of all organ systems, substantial increase in size, and the acquisition of functional capacity necessary for extrauterine life. Hormonal signaling, both from the mother and the developing fetus, plays an indispensable, highly orchestrated role in directing this critical maturation process. Disruptions during this window can lead to significant congenital anomalies or lifelong health consequences.
