Ferroptosis

Meaning

Ferroptosis is a distinct, regulated form of programmed cell death characterized biochemically by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and the subsequent accumulation of toxic lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS). Unlike apoptosis, ferroptosis is morphologically and mechanistically unique, relying on the excessive oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids within cellular membranes. This pathway is a critical factor in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including neurodegeneration, kidney injury, and cancer. Understanding the regulation of cellular iron metabolism is essential for modulating this pathway in longevity and anti-aging research.
