Female Hyperandrogenism

Meaning

Female Hyperandrogenism is a clinical and biochemical endocrinopathy defined by an excess of androgens, or male sex hormones, in a biological female, leading to observable signs of virilization. The characteristic clinical manifestations include hirsutism, which is excessive, male-pattern terminal hair growth, along with acne and androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern hair loss. This hormonal imbalance is frequently associated with ovulatory dysfunction, presenting as oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is by far the most common underlying etiology for this condition in reproductive-age women.
