FDA Compounding Pharmacies

Meaning

FDA compounding pharmacies refer to licensed pharmaceutical facilities that create customized drug formulations to meet the specific needs of an individual patient, often when a commercially available, FDA-approved drug is unsuitable. These pharmacies operate under two main regulatory frameworks: traditional 503A pharmacies, which are regulated by state boards, and 503B Outsourcing Facilities, which adhere to stricter FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) requirements for larger-scale production. In the hormonal health space, they are frequently utilized to prepare bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) in specific doses or dosage forms not commercially available.
