FDA Compounding

Meaning

FDA Compounding refers to the preparation of a customized medication by a licensed pharmacist in response to a specific, patient-specific prescription from a licensed practitioner. This practice is distinct from the mass manufacturing of commercially available, FDA-approved drugs, but it is still subject to regulatory oversight by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Compounding becomes a clinical necessity when a patient requires a specific dosage form, strength, or combination of ingredients that is not commercially available.
