Fas Ligand

Meaning

Fas Ligand (FasL) is a transmembrane protein belonging to the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) family, which functions as a potent inducer of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, upon binding to its cognate receptor, Fas (CD95). In hormonal health, this pathway is critical for maintaining immune tolerance, regulating the size of hormone-dependent tissues, and eliminating specific cells, such as those in the corpus luteum during the menstrual cycle or certain immune cells following an inflammatory response. Dysregulation of FasL signaling can contribute to autoimmune disorders or resistance to apoptosis in some pathological states.
