Farnesyl Pyrophosphate Synthase, often abbreviated as FPPS, is a pivotal enzyme within the mevalonate pathway, a crucial metabolic route in human physiology. This enzyme catalyzes the sequential condensation of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP) to form geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP), and then the subsequent addition of another IPP molecule to GPP, ultimately yielding farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP). FPP is a 15-carbon isoprenoid that serves as a fundamental precursor for a vast array of essential biomolecules, including cholesterol, steroid hormones, dolichols, ubiquinone, and a variety of prenylated proteins critical for cellular signaling.
