FADS1

Meaning

FADS1, short for Fatty Acid Desaturase 1, is a gene that provides instructions for making the delta-5 desaturase (D5D) enzyme. This enzyme plays a pivotal role in the human body’s metabolism of essential fatty acids, specifically by facilitating a crucial step in the conversion of shorter-chain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids into their longer-chain, more biologically active forms, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and arachidonic acid (AA) from linoleic acid (LA).
