FADS1

Meaning

Fatty Acid Desaturase 1, an enzyme encoded by the FADS1 gene, which is a rate-limiting component in the endogenous synthesis of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). This enzyme is specifically known as Delta-5 Desaturase (D5D) due to the position of the double bond it introduces into the fatty acid chain. Genetic variations in FADS1 significantly influence an individual’s ability to produce essential anti-inflammatory lipids. The enzyme is vital for creating complex fatty acids needed for cell structure and signaling.
