Extragonadal Estrogen

Meaning

Extragonadal estrogen refers to steroid hormones of the estrogen class synthesized in tissues beyond the primary reproductive glands. This production occurs predominantly in peripheral sites like adipose tissue, brain, bone, skin, and adrenal glands; the placenta also contributes during gestation. These estrogens are primarily formed through enzymatic conversion of androgen precursors.
