Extracellular Space Expansion

Meaning

An increase in the volume occupied by the fluid surrounding cells, often referred to as the interstitial space, which can reflect shifts in fluid dynamics regulated by osmotic gradients and vascular permeability. While necessary for nutrient exchange, excessive expansion can manifest as edema or indicate compromised lymphatic and renal function. This is relevant when assessing tissue hydration status relative to intracellular signaling.
