Exertional Hypogonadism

Meaning

A state of suppressed reproductive hormone production, characterized by abnormally low levels of testosterone in males or estrogen and progesterone in females, directly induced by high-volume, intense, or prolonged physical training. This condition represents a physiological maladaptation where the energy demands of excessive exercise supersede the body’s capacity to maintain normal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. It is a form of functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
