Exerkines

Meaning

Exerkines are a diverse group of biologically active signaling molecules, including peptides, microRNAs, and metabolites, that are released into the circulation from skeletal muscle fibers in response to muscle contraction during physical exercise. These molecules function as endocrine, paracrine, or autocrine mediators, transmitting the physiological benefits of exercise to distant organs such as the liver, adipose tissue, brain, and bone. Clinically, exerkines are a key component of the anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits of physical activity, acting as a crucial communication link between the musculoskeletal system and systemic health.
