Exercise-Induced Hormonal Imbalance

Meaning

Exercise-Induced Hormonal Imbalance is a state of endocrine dysfunction resulting from a chronic and uncompensated energy deficit or excessive physiological stress caused by intense physical training. This clinical condition manifests as a cascade of disruptions across the body’s major endocrine systems, notably the HPA, HPG, and HPT axes. It is a measurable consequence of pushing the body beyond its capacity for adequate recovery and adaptation. This imbalance is a hallmark of overtraining syndrome or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
