Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia

Meaning

Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia, or EAH, is a clinically significant condition defined by a dangerously low serum sodium concentration, typically below 135 mmol/L, occurring during or immediately following prolonged physical exertion. This physiological imbalance is a serious medical concern in endurance athletes and is primarily caused by an imbalance between excessive hypotonic fluid intake and the body’s impaired ability to excrete water. Early recognition and proper fluid management are essential to prevent severe neurological complications.
