Exendin-4

Meaning

Exendin-4 is a naturally occurring peptide hormone originally isolated from the saliva of the Gila monster, which acts as a potent agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R). This molecule and its synthetic analog, exenatide, are of significant clinical interest for their therapeutic application in managing type 2 diabetes and promoting weight loss due to their effect on glucose homeostasis and appetite regulation. Its classification as an incretin mimetic makes it a key pharmacological tool for improving pancreatic beta-cell function and reducing postprandial glucose excursions. The peptide’s prolonged biological half-life offers a distinct advantage over the naturally occurring human GLP-1 hormone.
