Executive Functions

Meaning

Executive Functions are a set of higher-level cognitive processes controlled by the prefrontal cortex of the brain that govern goal-directed behavior and enable an individual to manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions effectively. These functions include working memory, flexible thinking, inhibitory control, planning, and decision-making. Optimal hormonal balance, particularly involving thyroid hormones, cortisol, and sex steroids, is fundamentally necessary for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of these complex cognitive processes throughout the lifespan.
