Executive Function Scaffolding

Meaning

Executive Function Scaffolding describes the biological and physiological support system necessary for maintaining the integrity and optimal operation of the brain’s executive functions, such as planning, working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. This scaffolding is essentially the robust neurobiological foundation, including stable neurotransmitter levels and healthy cerebral infrastructure, that allows for complex, goal-directed behavior. When this support is compromised, subtle deficits in cognitive control and decision-making can emerge.
