Executive Function Integrity

Meaning

Executive Function Integrity refers to the robust, unimpaired state of the high-level cognitive processes controlled primarily by the prefrontal cortex, which are essential for goal-directed behavior and adaptive response to novel situations. This critical functional state encompasses working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and planning abilities, collectively representing the brain’s “command and control” system. The integrity of these functions is highly sensitive to the endocrine environment, particularly fluctuations in cortisol, thyroid hormones, and sex steroids. Maintaining this integrity is a cornerstone of cognitive health and personal effectiveness throughout the lifespan.
