Excitatory Amino Acids

Meaning

Excitatory amino acids (EAAs) are a class of neurotransmitters that, upon release, increase the probability of an action potential firing in the postsynaptic neuron, thereby promoting neuronal communication and brain activity. The most prominent example is glutamate, which plays a pivotal role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory formation across the central nervous system. In the context of hormonal health, EAAs are critical because they mediate the hypothalamic control of pituitary hormone release, including the pulsatile secretion of GnRH, which regulates the entire reproductive axis. Imbalances in EAA signaling are implicated in various neuroendocrine disorders.
