Excipients

Meaning

Excipients are pharmacologically inactive substances included in pharmaceutical formulations alongside the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). These non-active components serve critical functional roles, such as acting as binders, fillers, diluents, disintegrants, or coloring agents, to ensure the stability, bioavailability, and manufacturability of the final drug product. While generally inert, a patient’s sensitivity or allergy to a specific excipient must be clinically considered, especially in personalized compounding. Their selection is crucial for optimal drug delivery.
