Excipient Function

Meaning

The specific non-therapeutic roles performed by inactive ingredients, known as excipients, within a compounded medication or pharmaceutical formulation. These substances are intentionally added to enhance the stability, palatability, solubility, bioavailability, or overall physical characteristics of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Proper excipient selection is crucial in compounding, particularly in hormonal health, to ensure accurate dosing and optimal delivery of sensitive steroid hormones. Their function is critical for the drug’s performance, even though they exert no primary pharmacological effect.
