Excipient Compatibility

Meaning

Excipient compatibility refers to the critical pharmaceutical assessment of whether the inactive ingredients (excipients) in a drug formulation can coexist with the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and with each other without undergoing chemical or physical degradation over the product’s shelf life. This evaluation is fundamental in compounding hormonal preparations, ensuring the stability, bioavailability, and overall efficacy of the final medication. Incompatible excipients can catalyze API breakdown, leading to sub-potent or unsafe drug products.
