Euthyroid Hypothyroxinemia

Meaning

Euthyroid Hypothyroxinemia is a clinical laboratory finding characterized by abnormally low levels of total or free thyroxine (T4) in the bloodstream, occurring simultaneously with normal levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The “euthyroid” designation signifies that despite the low T4, the patient typically shows no overt clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism and the thyroid gland itself is functioning adequately, as evidenced by the normal TSH. This condition is frequently observed in the context of non-thyroidal illness, certain drug therapies, or specific physiological states like prematurity, representing an adaptation rather than primary endocrine failure.
