Etonogestrel

Meaning

Etonogestrel is a potent synthetic progestin hormone that is extensively utilized in various forms of hormonal contraception and specific replacement therapy, recognized clinically for its very high potency and strong, selective affinity for the progesterone receptor. As the biologically active metabolite of desogestrel, its primary function is to suppress the process of ovulation and concurrently thicken the cervical mucus to effectively prevent pregnancy. Clinically, it is frequently administered via a subdermal implant or a flexible vaginal ring for long-acting, highly effective, and reversible contraception.
